Before the ceremony began, these young women giggled amongst each other. Dressed in traditional ceremonial robes and adorned with seasonal flowers in their hair, they soon shifted into quiet concentration. I was drawn to the contrast between their carefree laughter and the centuries-old Shinto tradition they were about to step into.
