A meandering river cuts through the rugged landscape of Kerlingarfjöll, Iceland. Standing here, the wind pierced straight through my clothes and into my skin. It was one of those moments when the cold became part of the experience. Looking at this photograph, I can still feel it. The icy blue water carving its way through the volcanic landscape perfectly captures the raw beauty of Iceland, a place where the elements quietly remind you how small you are.
Some people say that trees seen from above look like broccoli. Once I heard that, I could never unsee it. For me, these tea fields remind me of the braided bread my mother used to bake. A lovely childhood memory that instantly brings back the comforting scent of freshly baked bread. Until I visited the Azores, I had never imagined tea bushes could grow in such graceful, flowing patterns.
At first glance, the tree almost looks photoshopped. Its pale branches seem impossible against the vibrant green of the tea fields. Yet everything in this photograph is exactly as I found it. Even the bench beneath the tree appears almost white. Was the tree really that bright, or does the lush green surrounding it deceive our eyes? I still don't know the answer, and perhaps that's what makes this scene so intriguing.
My mother and I came across these rolling tea fields while driving back to our holiday home on São Miguel. We wandered through the endless curves of carefully pruned tea bushes as the evening light softened. When I look at this photograph, I remember sharing that evening with my mother. The unhurried walk. Laughing because we had arrived after visiting hours, only to realise that being late was the greatest gift we could have received. The tea fields were completely ours.
